MOTION GRAPHICS
MOTION GRAPHICS
I took a motion graphic class last fall, right in the midst of the mania surrounding Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie. The first assignment was to create a short trailer for an alternate take on the Barbie movie. I brainstormed the lore of Barbie and experiences with the doll that were personal to me. I recalled a time in early childhood that I had lost one of my favorite dolls. She was rediscovered a year later, muddy and rain-soaked in the backyard. Horrified by the neglect, I remember the feeling of grotesque shame and sympathy for my Barbie, fixed on the pain and fear I must have inflicted upon her. (I should have known at this point I would be a creative, if for no other reason than the characteristic tortured sensitivity.) The first of these shorts is based on my interpretation of my Barbie’s ordeal. The second is a development of this idea, with a sweet ending to bring closure to the Barbie-in-the-rain saga.
